HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - The Township Committee voted unanimously at Tuesday night's meeting to appoint Bob Britting as the replacement for Steve Cohen, who resigned from the governing body last week just three months after being sworn to office.
There were two other candidates considered by the Committee, John Ciccarelli and Nate Santaromita.
Britting has served on the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Commission and serves on the Hillsborough Environmental Commission and the Hillsborough Board of Adjustment.
Britting lives on Michelle Lane with his wife Kelly and three sons, Robert (Robbie), Christian and Grayson.  Britting has worked as a senior business executive in the pharmaceutical industry for 22 years. He obtained his Master’s degree in business from LaSalle University and a doctorate in Organizational Management, with a research focus on human behavior and micro/macroeconomics from Walden University.   
Britting was endorsed last week by the Republican Party to run as their candidate in the June Primary; Republicans will now have to select another candidate, who will replace Committeeman Frank DelCore on the ballot. DelCore has served on the Committee for 15 years.
Britting will serve on the Committee until Dec. 31, and will run for the remaining two years of Cohen's term in the November general election.
The Committee moved quickly to fill the vacancy; Cohen resigned March 14.
Cohen, 68, was sworn to office at the township's January Reorganization meeting after winning election in November 2021.
“This is a sad day for me. Unfortunately, as a result of work responsibilities and an ongoing battle with long-haul COVID symptoms, I’ve decided to resign my position from the Township Committee. I realize that my health has to be a top priority,” Cohen said in his resignation letter.
"He's very upset about it," Lipani said. "He still has lingering issues with COVID-19; he works for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and commutes to Jersey City every day. Sometimes, you don't realize the responsibilities of elected office until after you get into it."
The other two Republicans considered by the Committee are also involved in local government.
Ciccarelli is a member of the township Planning board and past board member and president of the Hillsborough Soccer Club.
Santaromita is also a member of the township Planning board and president of the Hillsborough UNICO chapter, an Italian-American service and social organization.

“This is a sad day for me. Unfortunately, as a result of work responsibilities and an ongoing battle with long-haul COVID symptoms, I’ve decided to resign my position from the Township Committee. I realize that my health has to be a top priority,” Cohen said in his resignation letter.

In accordance with vacancy law, the municipal committee of the political party, in this case, the Republican Party, shall present the names of three (3) individuals to the Township Committee as nominees to fill the vacancy within 15 days. Then the Township Committee has thirty (30) days to make their selection and fill the vacancy.
“We thank Mr. Cohen for his willingness to serve and wish him continued health,” Lipani said.
