Courtesy of the Patch: patch.com/new-jersey/hillsborough/58-acres-farmland-be-preserved-hillsborough An Auten Road farm property owned by Hillsborough Township, totaling 58.71 acres, was recently put up for public bid, in an effort to further preserve farmland, announced Deputy Mayor Britting, at Tuesday’s Township Committee Meeting. Going forward this parcel can only be sold and used as farmland, as it now carries a deed restriction. "It is staying as farmland preserve in deed. It will never be anything but farmland," said Mayor Shawn Lipani at the Feb. 28 meeting. "This farm must stay a farm into perpetuity," said Britting, Liaison to the Agricultural Advisory Committee. "Land preservation remains a top priority in Hillsborough Township and each parcel preserved and protected from development maintains that goal," said Britting. The owners of this parcel will begin farming for the spring growing season. The Hillsborough Township Republican Committee selected Committeeman Jim Ruh and Catherine Payne to run in the Republican primary this June. As a 35 year plus resident, Committeeman Jim Ruh was appointed to the Hillsborough Township Committee last winter and previously served on the Hillsborough Board of Education. Catherine Payne who has lived in Hillsborough since 2007 currently serves on the Township Board of Adjustment and a Volunteer at GIGI’s Playhouse and Saint Joseph’s Church in Hillsborough. With the newly launched infrastructure software launched by Mayor Lipani and the Township Committee and the yearly road patchwork across the town, roadwork is now a sustainable effort for Hillsborough Township. As it pertains to the Amsterdam project, Hillsborough Committeeman Ciccarelli made it clear that this leadership team is focused on minimal financial impact to Township resident taxpayers. "The township received grants for all three phases so full repaving will be at a minimal cost to the township," said Ciccarelli. Promises kept. Promises made. At little cost to taxpayers. At the March 14th Township Committee meeting Committeeman Tomson provided an update related to a new, safe zone area, at the Township building that allows people buying and selling items online to meet. Committeeman Ciccarelli stated, "This is an opportunity for the Township to assist Somerset County with the purchase of this property for Open Space preservation in connection to the Sourland Mountain Preserve."
Hillsborough Township has approximately 40% open space preserved.
